During the past 11 months, nearly 600 people contacted the Family Assistance Program of Catholic Charities of Arkansas (CCA). People throughout the state, though mostly in the Little Rock area, are referred to us through other charitable organizations, social service organizations, medical facilities and utility companies. Google searches for financial assistance bring up Catholic Charities, as do searches for utility assistance and rental assistance. Catholic Charities of Arkansas' Catholic Immigration Services in Little Rock (CISLR) recently began partnering with the Mexican Consulate in Little Rock. The two organizations have met twice so far in 2018. They first met at the consulate, followed by CISLR hosting them. Employees of CISLR as well as others within Catholic Charities of Arkansas have met with both the consul and deputy consul. The Solemnity of Sts. Peter and Paul, Apostles is celebrated on June 29. Though it is a solemnity, it is not a holy day of obligation. The tradition of honoring these saints on the same day goes back to the early Church. “Both apostles share the same feast day, for these two were one; and even though they suffered on different days, they were as one. Peter went first and Paul followed. And so we celebrate this day made holy for us by the apostles’ blood. Bishop Anthony B. Taylor will celebrate the closing Mass for the 2018 Arkansas Catholic Charismatic Conference at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, July 29 at St. Joseph Church in Conway. All are invited to attend. The conference, which begins July 27, will be held at St. Joseph Parish Center in Conway, a new location this year. In addition to Mass, this event will offer praise and worship music, prayer, workshops, a healing service, eucharistic adoration, the sacrament of reconciliation and more. Arkansas Catholic received six Catholic Press Association awards during the 2018 Catholic Media Conference hosted by the Diocese of Green Bay, Wisconsin June 15. Editor Malea Hargett got three writing awards: first place for best pro-life coverage for small weekly newspapers, honorable mention for feature writing for small weekly newspapers and shared a third-place award with associate editor Aprille Hanson for best reporting on ecumenical and interfaith issues. "This latest action of our government in separating children from their parents shows us clearly the depths of the depravity that sets in when, year after year, we deny people their basic human rights — in this case, the right to immigrate when desperate circumstances so require.
