This year, the Solemnity of Most Sacred Heart of Jesus is celebrated Friday, June 8. Though it is a solemnity, it is not a holy day of obligation. Although devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus goes back many centuries, it was not celebrated universally in the Church until 1856 when Pope Pius IX made it a solemnity. It is always celebrated during the octave of Corpus Christi or 19 days after Pentecost Sunday. The diocesan Respect Life Office is hosting its first Leaders for Life Youth Conference for high school youth July 13-14 at St. John Catholic Center in Little Rock. The goal is to educate and empower young Catholics to consider what it means to develop a consistent ethic of life and explore how they can build a culture of life in their own families, parishes, schools and communities. A Mass of Thanksgiving will be celebrated Tuesday, June 26 to honor five priests who are celebrating special anniversaries of priestly service in the Diocese Little Rock. Bishop Anthony B. Taylor, who celebrated his 10th anniversary of episcopacy on June 5, will also be honored. In addition, 16 retired priests will be recognized for their service. The bishop will celebrate the Mass at 5:30 p.m. at the Cathedral of St. Andrew in Little Rock. A dinner reception will follow in McDonald Hall that is open to everyone. No reservations are required. Bishop Anthony B. Taylor is celebrating his 10th anniversary as shepherd of the Diocese of Little Rock, June 5, while on retreat with priests at Subiaco Abbey. A special Mass of thanksgiving, to celebrate all jubilarian priests serving in Arkansas, will include the bishop's anniversary on June 26. For the first time, the Respect Life Office will offer respect life grants to help support groups and organizations in the Diocese of Little Rock that promote a consistent ethic of life. Grants between $100 and $1,000 will be awarded at the discretion of Bishop Anthony B. Taylor and are dependent on the availability of funds. The Pastoral Plan for Pro-Life Activities from the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops divides pro-life ministry into four categories: education and public information; pastoral care; public policy; and prayer and worship. The annual Catholic Charities Summer Institute (C²SI) will be held July 8-14 in Little Rock and Perryville. This event is open to rising high school freshmen through recent high school graduates who seek to not only learn about the Church's social teachings but to put them into action.
