Bishop Anthony B. Taylor announced the following pastoral appointments Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2019, for the Diocese of Little Rock. Effective Oct. 28: Rev. Balaraju Akkala, appointed associate pastor of St. Stephen Church in Bentonville, and administrator of Blessed Stanley Rother Church in Decatur. He is relieved of his responsibilities as associate pastor of St. Vincent de Paul Church in Rogers; Rev. Msgr. Francis Malone, JCL, PA, will celebrate the annual All Souls Day Mass at Calvary Cemetery at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 2. After the Mass, he will lead a procession through the cemetery praying the rosary and blessing graves. The cemetery is located at the corner of Wright Avenue and South Woodrow Street in Little Rock. Catholic Charities of Arkansas raised $38,000 to support its programs through the Bishop McDonald-Catholic Charities Golf Classic Oct. 7. It was held at Maumelle Country Club with 27, four-person teams that included three priests and two deacons. Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Hot Springs Village had the most parish teams with six plus the parish’s Knights of Columbus Council 10208 entered two teams. Each fall, families and friends are invited to purchase daffodil bulbs to be planted on the graves of their loved ones in Calvary Cemetery in Little Rock. That way, by spring, the bright yellow flowers become a living memorial to all those who have been laid to rest in the historic cemetery. For a minimum donation of $10, cemetery staff will plant a group of five daffodils on the grave of your choice. (Five-bulb groups cannot be split.) The Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed, or All Souls Day, is the feast day dedicated to praying for all those who have died and are in purgatory. Souls in purgatory "have not yet been purified" in order to enter heaven. That said, the Church teaches those in purgatory will get to heaven eventually and our prayers help them get there. Bishop Anthony B. Taylor released the following statement Monday, Oct. 7, 2019, regarding federal changes to immigration rules. "Depending on the outcome of litigation cases, beginning Oct. 15, the Trump administration will deny individuals seeking legal status for those deemed to likely become a public charge. To determine whether an immigrant will possibly become a public charge in the future, United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) or consular officers will look at applicant’s age, health, family status, assets, financial status, education and skills. ..." ... The Diocese of Little Rock will host its one-day Junior High Youth Rally Sunday, Nov. 10 at Mount St. Mary Academy in Little Rock. This year’s theme, "Rescued to Find Ourselves," will be presented by Catholic comedians and musicians Caitie Beardmore and Michaela Gafke, also known as “Sister Mary Rose” and “Sister Maria Stella,” of Nun and Nunner. This one-day event, which will also include praise and worship, games, skits, lunch and Mass, is open to youth in grades 6-8. The cost is $40 a person. Scholarships are available. ... More
