This year, on July 4, we celebrate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence by the Second Continental Congress in 1776. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) invites the faithful to join this observance by lifting up the contributions of Catholics and the impact of our faith on the history of this country. Beginning with the consecration the United States to the Sacred Heart of Jesus on June 11, the bishops offer many ways to mark this special anniversary through its special feature, "We Hold These Truths."
Suggestions include inviting parishes and individuals to pray for unity and healing in our country by contributing to a collective 250 Hours of Adoration and 250 Works of Mercy. The bishops also offer a national prayer service that is "rooted in the Church’s pastoral mission of welcome, accompaniment and solidarity." Titled "A Path Toward Justice: A National Prayer Service Honoring the Many Journeys that Shaped America," the purpose of this prayer service is to "acknowledge and honor the many diverse communities that have journeyed to the United States in search of hope, safety and opportunity, while also recognizing the voices, sufferings and enduring contributions of those who were forcibly brought to this land. This resource offers a template for a prayer service for immigrants that may be celebrated at a variety of sites or points of entry throughout the country."
Other resources include the "America 250 Video Series" which offers five episodes on Catholic life during the colonial era, the different immigrant communities who have made the Catholic Church in this country what it is today, the role of Catholic liturgy and devotions in American culture, the Catholic commitment to healthcare in the United States, especially the important role of women religious and the history and important role of Catholic military chaplains. There is also the "America 250 Article Series," which also explores Catholic contributions in the 250 years of American history.
