Consecrated Virgins

Updated July 24, 2024

The ancient order of virgins was restored in the 1983 revision of the Code of Canon Law. A consecrated virgin expresses the holy resolution of following Christ more closely. She is consecrated to God by the diocesan bishop according to the approved liturgical rite, is mystically betrothed to Christ, the Son of God, and is dedicated to the service of the Church (canon 604). The diocese/diocesan bishop assumes no financial responsibility for the consecrated virgin(s) living in the diocese. The diocesan bishop does, however, exercise pastoral oversight and fatherly care. In the Diocese of Little Rock, this function is carried out by the minister for religious. For more information, visit the United States Association of Consecrated Virgins or read Bishop Anthony B. Taylor's homily about consecrated virgins.
