The Diocese of Little Rock is working with several state and charitable organizations to provide relief and recovery to victims of the Feb. 5 tornadoes. Arkansas parishes took up a collection during Masses Feb. 9-10 to support this effort. Additional monetary donations can be mailed to Disaster Relief Fund, Catholic Charities of Arkansas, P.O. Box 7565, Little Rock, AR 72217-7565.
Catholic Charities of Arkansas is overseeing the diocese’s recovery efforts. Volunteer parish teams are being trained to do case management and assist victims on a long-term basis. Training is being handled by the diocese’s Hurricane Recovery Office, which operates similar teams to assist victims of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
Existing parish teams in Cherokee Village, Heber Springs and Mountain Home have been activated while volunteers are needed for teams to be trained in Atkins, Clinton, Fairfield Bay, Horseshoe Bend and Mountain View.
Tornado victims should go to FEMA centers in their area or call (800) 621-FEMA to apply for assistance. They can also access information on the Web site, www.fema.gov.
Catholics who wish to donate clothing or other supplies should call the United Way at (866) 580-4567 or visit the Arkansas Department of Emergency Management's Web site, www.adem.arkansas.gov. Click on "Disaster Donations" for information.
Food donations should be made through a local food bank or by calling (501) 399-9999. To volunteer your time, contact a parish disaster relief team in your area.
